Carlsen Inv Prelim, 22 April 2020

Round 3.1 of the 2020 Carlsen Invitational Preliminaries (April 22) was won by Carlsen as Black against Caruana. The opening was a Petroff Defense — Caruana as White had chosen a quiet system, Carlsen defended actively, and Carlsen converted a small endgame edge in roughly 50 moves.

The Magnus Carlsen Invitational was the first major online elite event of the pandemic period. The format — 5+3 rapid, double round- robin preliminaries followed by knockout — became the template for subsequent online tournaments through 2020 and beyond. The preliminaries featured Carlsen against the world’s strongest players in extended day-matches.

The Magnus Carlsen Invitational was won by Carlsen himself, with Hikaru Nakamura as runner-up. Caruana qualified for the knockout but did not reach the final. The result established the pattern that would dominate the 2020 online tour: Carlsen winning his own events with consistency, the rest of the elite finishing in their usual order of strength.

The pandemic period — from March 2020 through summer 2021 — saw the most concentrated period of online elite chess in history. Over 50 major events were held; total prize money exceeded $5 million; attendance on Twitch and YouTube broke records repeatedly. The infrastructure built during this period has continued to grow since, with annual Champions Chess Tour series, Speed Chess Championship, and other formats.
